Educator guide

Create and run secure exams — wizard, AI questions, live monitoring, and results — step by step.

1. Dashboard & navigation

After login you land on Overview with quick stats and alerts.

  • Overview — home dashboard
  • Exams — list, publish, share codes, edit
  • Live Control — real-time proctoring during active exams
  • Students — rosters and results across exams
  • Analytics — faculty activity reports
  • Create Exam — starts the Exam Wizard
  • Settings — profile and password

First time?

Use Create Exam in the sidebar — it’s the fastest path to a complete draft.

2. Exam Wizard (4 steps)

Build an exam from title to questions in one guided flow.

1

Step 1 — Basic info

Set title, duration (minutes), and optional registration fields for students.

2

Step 2 — Question type

Choose MCQ only, Coding only, or Mixed (both in one exam).

3

Step 3 — Configuration

Set how many questions, subject, topic, difficulty, and coding languages if applicable.

4

Step 4 — Preview

Review and select questions. Use the QIE panel here to generate more. Finish only when at least one question is selected.

3. AI question generation (QIE)

Question Intelligence Engine — pool + AI, with educator review.

1

Open QIE on Preview step

Settings from step 3 carry over (subject, count, difficulty).

2

Generate

Click Generate. SafeExam pulls from your question pool first, then uses AI for any shortfall.

3

Review before publish

Read every MCQ and coding problem. Deselect or edit weak items — you are responsible for content quality.

Always review AI output

AI can make mistakes. Never publish without scanning questions and test cases.

Mixed exams

MCQ and coding batches can generate in parallel to save time.

4. Publish, start & share

Students can only join when the exam is published and active.

1

Publish

From Exams, publish the draft. This generates the joinable exam code.

2

Start exam

Start opens the live window so students in the lobby can begin.

3

Share code or link

Copy the exam code or share link from the exam page / success screen. Send via classroom chat or email.

4

End when finished

End closes the exam — no new starts. Students already in can still submit if time remains.

5. Live Control (monitoring)

Watch sessions, violations, and events while the exam runs.

1

Open Live Control

Pick the active exam from the list or use Open Live Monitor from the exam success screen.

2

Read the dashboard

Metrics show active, idle, completed, and flagged counts.

  • Session table — progress %, violation count, last active
  • Activity feed — recent tab switches and other events
3

Inspect a student

Click a row to see that student’s event timeline.

Violation policy

Only tab switches increment the hard counter. At 3, the student is auto-submitted.

6. Coding exams

Students write code in Monaco; Judge0 runs tests in the cloud.

  • Students Run against sample cases, then Submit solution for grading
  • Hidden test cases are used on final submit
  • Ensure JUDGE0 is configured in production (mock mode is for dev only)

7. Results & export

Review attempts and release marks when ready.

1

View results

Students page for all exams, or per-exam results from the Exams list.

2

Export CSV

Use export where available for records or LMS upload.

3

Release results

Students don’t see scores until you release them from exam actions.

Frequently asked questions

Confirm the exam is Published and Started. Check the code. Ensure the student registered if registration fields are enabled.
